“She wasn’t just Batgirl—she was a trailblazer for every girl who dreamed of being a hero.” With her bold charisma and unforgettable presence, Yvonne Craig brought the iconic character of Batgirl to life, paving the way for female superheroes on screen and empowering a generation along the way.
Before gracing TV screens, Craig pursued a very different dream—ballet. Her dedication to dance laid the foundation for the agility and physicality that would later become trademarks of her acting. As fate would have it, her career pivoted toward Hollywood, where she began landing roles in film during the late 1950s and early 60s. Among her early credits were performances in Gidget and It Happened at the World’s Fair, where she starred alongside Elvis Presley, showcasing not only her acting chops but also her charm and natural stage presence.

Her big break came in the late 1960s, when she was cast as Barbara Gordon, also known as Batgirl, in the Batman TV series. This role didn’t just elevate her career—it shattered conventions. At a time when women were often relegated to secondary roles, Craig’s Batgirl was intelligent, capable, and unapologetically brave. She brought energy, humor, and heart to the role, proving that female characters could be both dynamic and deeply empowering.

Her performance helped redefine how women were portrayed in superhero media. In addition to her time on Batman, she made a memorable appearance as a green-skinned alien in Star Trek, further cementing her place in television history. Her career throughout the 60s and 70s may not have been filled with lead roles, but she left an indelible mark with each performance.

In later years, Craig gracefully transitioned away from acting. She built a new life working in real estate and became a dedicated public advocate, lending her voice to causes close to her heart. Notably, she worked on public service campaigns, including efforts to promote HPV vaccination, using her platform to protect and educate the next generation.

Though she stepped away from the limelight, her influence never dimmed. Yvonne Craig became one of television’s earliest and most enduring female superheroes, and her legacy continues to shine through modern portrayals of strong, empowered women on screen.

Sadly, she passed away on August 17, 2015, after a battle with cancer. But her spirit lives on—in reruns, in comic books, and in the hearts of every young girl who watched Batgirl and believed she could be a hero, too.
