An Arizona man was reunited with his dog eight years after the miniature pinscher ran off during a brief stop in Oklahoma City.
Paul Guilbeault recalled the fateful day when Damian, his 5-year-old dog, disappeared. Guilbeault was moving from Massachusetts to Arizona and stopped in Oklahoma City for a break. While walking Damian, the dog ran toward the road.
“I was trying to stop him from running into the street, but he either got scared or frustrated and bolted. He took off down the service road, and I just couldn’t catch him,” Guilbeault told AZ Central.
Despite spending a week searching the area, Guilbeault couldn’t find Damian and had no choice but to continue his journey to Arizona.
Eight years later, Guilbeault received an unexpected message from Rick Chambers, a resident of Oklahoma. Chambers wrote, “I found your dog.”
Chambers had discovered Damian wandering alone and brought him to a veterinarian. A microchip scan revealed Damian’s name and Guilbeault’s contact details. Damian was found about 30 miles from where he originally went missing.
The dog’s whereabouts during those eight years remain a mystery, but Chambers noted Damian was underweight and had severely overgrown nails.
Guilbeault and his husband immediately drove to Oklahoma to bring Damian back home to Phoenix.
“He’s as happy as can be and definitely recognizes me,” Guilbeault said, grateful to finally have his beloved pet back after so many years.
